Explore is Instagram’s discovery surface: a grid of content from accounts you do not follow, chosen from what people with similar behaviour engaged with. Landing on it is how a post reaches beyond an existing audience. Explore is heavily influenced by saves and shares, and by how long people spend on a post. It is also location-aware, which is why a local venue can appear to people nearby without paying for it.
